The Eco-Friendly Traveler

When talking eco-friendly destinations, the stigma that follows the word “eco” is usually is visioned as a rustic lodge with that dreaded communal outhouse, a full vegan-gluten free menu, and mandatory “tuck your pants into your socks so you don’t get attacked by ticks” livin’.

Well I have news for you… Eco-Friendly can be LUXURY. Rebeca here, CARE Travel’s very own outdoor enthusiast, adventure-seeking hippie, and Monday-through-Friday Office Manager. You’ve read my previous blogs about vacationing on a budget, travels via the back of a bike, or my far too many blog posts about the wonders of Alaska…. But today I am going to switch things up a little, give you a little taste of the sweet life, offer some more upscale lodging options for the traveler who wants to be pampered and woo-ed. Below, I’ve highlighted my top picks for sustainable luxury lodging.  ~ Enjoy and Safe Travels!

Lodging on the Amazon River

This lodge is at the top of my bucket list! This Amazonian EcoLodge is located right outside the Yasuni National Park. Tucked away in the rainforest, the lodge offers daily excursions for their guests. Get into the outdoors (with a guide, of course) visiting native communities, hiking, canoe tours, birdwatching and much more! In the evening, sip your cocktail and enjoy exquisite, locally produced cuisine, while sitting on the deck overlooking Lake Garzacocha.

For the Ocean Lovers

Hosting one of the most jaw-dropping panoramic views, this grand St. Lucia resort certainly cannot go unnoted! Originating as a coco plantation, this resort now sits on a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each of the 37 suites is constructed of locally harvest materials and each unique piece of furniture hand-made by a local artisans. Those wonders are simply the beginning. Savor the locally sourced dishes prepared in the restaurant, overlooking views of the Caribbean Sea and St. Lucia’s twin volcanic Piton peaks!

Arctic Living

Don’t forget to pack your snow boots… Located 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle, this resort provides the ultimate in seclusion and upscale amenities. Rapidly gaining recognition for their Glass Igloo rooms, where you can gaze at the northern lights above your bed as you softly fall asleep to the light falling of snow outside. Two restaurants on-site offer local Lappish cuisine. Ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Rent equipment, right on property, like skis, snowshoes, sleds, and bikes, to explore the surrounding terrain.
